The United Nations, by Resolution 690/91, decided to put into effect this particular mission with the purpose to control the course of the referendum, which was postponed several times and is finally foreseen “within December 2000”. About 75,000 citizens of the former Spanish colony, annexed by Morocco in 1975, will be called to decide if they wish to create a new State or not.
