This mission was born after the UNCIP (1949-1951), as consequence of  the agreement between Pakistani and Indian Army. This agreement was done in Karachi. Under this agreement it was fixed a truce in the  conflict Jamnu–Kasmir, which started after the division of British India in 1947. This agreement was better detalied in 1972 with the Simla Treaty.  

Italy provides  the mission with observers and also with an airplane  C47 of the 306° Group, which operated among 1957 to 1963 with the distribution of food to the local people.

L’UNMOGIP has more than 45 people, 7 of them are Italian.
