The Italian soldiers deployed in Mozambique with the UNOMOZ mission were distributed along the "Beira corridor”, a strip of land of 290 kilometres wide which followed the Zimbabwe River all the way out to the Indian Ocean. The Italian contingent arrived in 1993.

Their task was to protect streets, railways, and important lines of communication from attacks by Renano’s rebels. This is a faction of Mozambique’s Resistance which has been in opposition since the former Portuguese colony proclaimed itself independent on June 25, 1975.
