ALMOST 3000 Italian troops are to be deployed to southern Iraq, Defence Minister Antonio Martino
said last April 2003.
The minister told the Italian senate that the force would be "mainly
charged with providing security, protection, surveillance reconnaissance and
assistance" and would be commanded from the southern city of Basra.
"The use of force will be according to circumstances, respecting international law and in conformity with Italian regulations," Martino said when asked about the rules of engagement to be applied.
"It's a difficult mission that involves risks."
The Italian parliament voted on April 15 2003 to approve the deployment of a civilan and military contingent to Iraq to maintain order, help the reconstruction effort and distribute humanitarian aid.
