In the period between spring and summer 1900, the Western Powers organized an expedition with the goal to set free Europeans trapped within the delegations’ district of Peking. The Treaty divided China into influence areas, reducing to a fiction the sovereignty of the Imperial court.

Italy also took part in the International Expedition Corp, with the declared purpose to rescue its fellow country-men and to restore the status quo.
