In the year 1897, during the disputes between Greeks and Otomans, some guards of the European embassies were kilt, in La Canea, the most important town in the island of Creta. For this reason, Italy accepted immediately the British proposal to participate, with France and Russia, at an international peace forces mission.

Italy sent the following troops:

- 12° Battallion of the 3° Bersaglieri (Sharpshooters)

- 1°   Battallion of the  36° Infantry

- 8°     Mountain Soldiers

Another group of 30  Carabineiri was sent there, in order to train the islanders' garrison. As evidence of Italian presence in the island, you may see the Savoy coat of arm, in the cancellation on a card with  the Cretan garrison.
